Interview with the Artist

Interviewer: How did you become an artist?

Artist: I started painting as soon as I could pick up a brush, but I don’t think I considered myself an artist until I dedicated myself completely to it.

Interviewer: How is your artistic process?

Artist: Just as the historical artists relied on mirrors and magnifying glasses, I rely on my camera, iPad, and printer.

My recent work aims to break free from all constraints, including the process. It´s not as easy as it sounds, especially after years of doing things a certain way, but to evolve as an artist, I need to leave my comfort zone to see what is possible.

Interviewer: Subject matter and inspiration?

Artist: My subject matter usually addresses philosophical and existential questions.

Art can be a powerful tool if used wisely. Hence my collections ARS GRATIA MARIS and AESOP.

As for inspiration. It can come at any moment, like a sneeze. Something will set it off!

Interviewer: How long does it take to paint a picture?

Artist: How long is a piece of string?

Interviewer: Which historical or contemporary artists have influenced you most?

Artist: I’m influenced by all historical art. Especially art that broke boundaries for its time, Piero della Francesca’s mathematical perspective or Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase both leave me awestruck for completely different reasons.

Recently, I’ve been drawn to early Gothic art, the imagination the medieval artists relied on to present creatures they had never seen, always inspires me.

Hieronymous Bosch and Desmond Morris stand out to me for this same reason—pure creative imagination. As for contemporary artists, I try not to let any of them influence me stylistically.

Interviewer: How do you deal with artist’s block or moments of creative stagnation during the painting process?

Artist: I rarely experience artist’s block, but if I do, it’s usually concerned with how to present an idea rather than trying to find one in the first place. I can spend months, even years, just deciding on the final composition. X-Ray any of my paintings, and you´ll see dozens of different versions beneath.
